Mary has been a practicing full
time professional Artist for 27 years. She
left New Zealand in 1983 and lived and worked in Australia and South
East Asia for 17 years, until the year 2000 when she returned to
live in New Zealand. She now resides in Redcliffs, Christchurch. She
also owns and operates the LOOK Gallery in Redcliffs alongside her
husband; Stephen Bessant.
Mary's maiden name is Nicolle. Her
Grandfather was Jack
Nicolle, a well known Commercial Artist and
Illustrator in the U.K. who illustrated the Biggles books including;
'Biggles Flies South' along with a wide range of boy's magazines
like the 'Eagle'
comics for example. Her Great Uncle was Patrick
Nicolle, also a well known English Illustrator and artist for many
magazines such as the 'LOOK and LEARN' volumes. So art is definately
in the blood for Mary, and very much a part of her family
background.
Mary has painted an extensive
amount of work for both Private and Public Corporations
internationally. She has also exhibited her art in Singapore,
Australia, Malaysia and New Zealand in both solo and group shows.
Her paintings are in both private and corporate collections in:
Australia, Holland, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Spain,
Sweden, New Zealand, Germany, Mexico, U.S.A. and the U.K.
When Mary lived in Singapore, she
painted a lot of artworks with her husband, Stephen, for high-end
hotels, large corporate offices, and departmental stores such as
Takashimaya and Ngee Ann City.
